Josh Taylor, 21, is Scotland’s top amateur boxer and secured his place at the London 2012 Olympics when he reached the semi-final of the second Olympic qualifying event in Trabzon, Turkey with a 17-9 win over Armenia's Vladimir Sarukhanyan.
A junior taekwondo champion, Josh began boxing at the age of 15 under the tutelage of Terry McCormack at Lochend ABC in Edinburgh.He quickly established himself as one of Scotland’s top amateurs and has represented his country many times.In 2010 he boxed for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi where he secured silver in the 60kg lightweight category, losing out to future Team GB colleague, Tom Stalker, in the final.
In 2011, he joined the GB Boxing set-up and competed in both the European and World Championships of that year in the 64kg light-welterweight category. In 2012, he made the decision to move back down to lightweight where a qualification place was still available.
GB Boxing’s nutritionist, Mark Ellison, and Strength & Conditioning Coach, Ian Pyper, developed an individualised regime to enable Josh to make the lower weight and in April 2012, all of his hard work paid-off when he reached the last four in the Trabzon qualifier to secure Great Britain’s 60kg slot at London and
ensure Scotland was represented in the Olympic boxing team.
A dedicated and hard working individual who never gives less than 100%, Josh likes to spend time with his family and girlfriend when he is away from the gym and credits much of his success to the support he has enjoyed from his parents and close family members throughout his career.
